early 19th century Engraved by T J Busby, from a drawing by F W L Stockdale.
(With thanks to Mrs G Margrie from Edwin Margrie - see note
below.)
The archives of Exeter University tell us that the artist was in fact
"Frederick Wilton Litchfield Stockdale (1786-1858), antiquary (and)
author." See MS19 - The Stockdale Collection, 1828-1858.

| "Edwin John Margrie was
born at 44 Tharp Road, Beddington in 1918. (His grandmother) was a
regular member of the congregation... two of her daughters gave an altar
cloth in her memory... It was (Edwin's) proud responsibility,
particularly on dark Sundays, to guide his grandmother to church with a
torch. In those days there was a farm between Tharp Road and the
church and the rutted road was a hazard to be treated with care.
"This picture was found by (Edwin's) daughter when on holiday
on the Norfolk Broads... and bought by her for her father's Christmas
present. He was so taken with the coincidence that it was always
(up until the day of his death) hung where he could see it, and it was
his wish that it should be given the the church when he died as he had
such fond memories of attending with his grandmother." |
